About me and why I’m doing this.
Hi, I’m Monique.
I will be taking part in the 2013 Cycle for Girls to raise money for Plan. I have long supported Plan through child sponsorship and believe they do make a difference.
In 2011 I was diagnosed with early breast cancer, my little daughter was nearly 1 year old. I spent most of the year having treatment and getting over the treatment whilst also caring for my daughter and trying to keep life as normal as possible. I consider myself to be very lucky, I was very supported by my husband, my family, friends and members of the medical profession. And now I am well and ready to take on a challenge of my own choosing.
When I heard about the Cycle for Girls I thought it sounded like a fantastic thing to take part in for many reasons. I see that change is needed for girls and it would be great to be part of making change happen. Physically I am back to normal, but like a lot of people wouldn’t mind being a bit fitter! Seeing Vietnam and Cambodia by bike sounds like a good way to travel to two countries I may never have the chance to visit otherwise, whilst raising awareness for Plan and the Because I am a Girl program.
I have a lot of fundraising to do as I must raise at least $3,000, but have set my target as $5,000 (which will go to Plan for this campaign.) I have never done anything like this before, so although the training and riding will be a challenge, so is the fundraising!
Best wishes,
Monique
